COVID-19

Letter to NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer

June 2020

To The Honorable Scott Stringer,

I am a 13-year-old student who lives in Brooklyn, a city, which as you know, was one of the most affected cities by COVID-19. My dad who works as a taxi driver cannot work because he does not want to get the virus. This has caused our budget for food to become a bit low and it has been really tough to make ends meet. It is my understanding that the New York City police are getting more funding while social services which aim to help people during the quarantine are getting its budget halved. Reducing the NYC police budget and re-allocating those funds to social services will make quarantine much easier and less frightening since people won’t have to worry about how they are going to get food or other resources without a job.

If you cut the budget of the NYPD it would benefit my family and other families as more money put into social services will allow fewer families to worry about what to eat and instead focus on being safe from Covid-19.

I know you’ve considered freezing hiring, cutting police overtime, and improving officer discipline. This would be the right choice and by using your influence as Comptroller you will have a better impact on improving New Yorker’s lives.

Sincerely,
Jeem J. Rahman
